In 2013, a movement was formed based on Facebook to promote the interests of the Mexican state of Baja California. The movement was formed in response to perceived injustices by the Mexican federal government. A Facebook page was created proclaiming the "independence of Baja California" because of the federal government's intention to increase the value-added tax from 11% to 16%, the rate paid in the rest of the country.〔(vertigopolitico.com )〕〔(elporvenir.com.mx )〕 This move is more an act of protest that a serious attempt at independence.〔(zocalo.com.mx )〕 On October 30, 2013, the proposed country's new flag and currency were presented at a rock concert in the city of Tijuana. The first mass demonstration, called the Caravan of Repudiation, was to be held in Tijuana and Mexicali on November 10. On November 10 a few dozen cars driving through Tijuana for an hour and honking outside the local office of the ruling party. No one claimed responsibility although a number of drivers stated they learned about it through social media. Shortly after the demonstration the leaders of this movement held a press conference. They identified themselves as author Juan Carlos Reyna, businessman Carlos Gomez Sotelo and anthropologist Ricardo Martínez de Castro.
